Eulogy for Neil

We all knew deep down this day would come. We just never expected it to arrive so soon. Like all of you, I am still trying to process the enormity of this loss. Yet, it is a profound privilege to have the honor of delivering this eulogy on behalf of the United Independent Movement, to honor its leader, its president, and my dear friend.

I stand here today because of Neil. I am part of this extraordinary movement because of Neil. Beyond his beloved children and grandchildren, this movement that became a party, stands as Neil’s greatest legacy. On behalf of the UIM, I pledge to uphold the values that have united all of us as party members, colleagues, volunteers, and officials, and to ensure that Neil’s legacy endures, growing to its fullest potential and purpose.

Neil was more than a leader, he was fearless. He never shied away from speaking truth to power, no matter how uncomfortable or unpopular it might have been. He confronted injustice head-on and stood tall in the face of challenges that would have shaken lesser men. To Neil, courage was not about the absence of fear, but the refusal to be silent in the face of wrong.

What made Neil remarkable was not only his fearlessness but also his heart. While many leaders sought comfort in the halls of power, Neil was happiest among ordinary South Africans, on the streets, in township communities, in rural villages, and in bustling city markets. He felt most alive when walking shoulder-to-shoulder with the people he loved so deeply. He would stop to listen, to laugh, to argue, and to share stories. He carried the voices of everyday South Africans into the arenas of leadership, making sure that those voices were not only heard but respected.

Above all else, Neil was fiercely in love with South Africa. His love for this country was not blind or naïve, it was a love rooted in both its beauty and its brokenness, a love that compelled him to fight for justice, to stand for truth, and to dream of a nation united in dignity, peace, and opportunity. South Africa was in his blood, and he gave every ounce of himself to see it thrive. Even in the end, his life.

Neil broke the mold of what many expect from politicians and political leaders. As president of the UIM, he set an example that captured hearts across South Africa and earned the respect of high-ranking officials and party leaders alike. His passion, his humor, his occasional bursts of anger, his moments of heartfelt emotion, his raw honesty, his ice cream awards, his “moer koffie,” and his “bliksem strale” will forever remain part of our shared memories. There has never been anyone quite like Neil, and there never will be.

His passing leaves a vast void, not only in our lives but within our organisation. Neil ignited a fire in countless hearts across South Africa and touched many lives. We have no doubt that, had he been granted more time, he would have inspired millions and helped transform South Africa for the better.

We will miss his laughter, his courage, his stubborn honesty, and his unwavering belief that South Africa’s best days still lie ahead. Though he has left us, Neil’s spirit continues to live in each of us, in every act of service, in every word of truth, and in every moment we choose to put the people of this country first.

Neil, we honor you. We thank you. And we promise you this: your dream for South Africa will not die with you, it will live through us.

Rest in peace, fearless son of South Africa.
